You have the good answer, or you have the evil answer. In Dragon Age: Inquisition, the choices presented during the dialogue options followed the same black and white morality that the game is famous for. Let’s consider the narrative choices presented in both games. So, The Witcher 3 placed you in an intriguing scenario, but that wouldn’t have been worth much if it was not complemented by a powerful narrative. It felt great not being suddenly and unfittingly worshiped by every character you encountered. You’re still a monster hunter for hire, often spending time on the road being penniless and homeless. You’re playing as a guy who went through a mutation that has blessed you with heightened senses and supernatural reactions, but that’s it.
In fact, the majority of the time, people will treat you with disgust, disdain, and any other ‘dis’ word you can think of. To be perfectly honest, there is something oddly refreshing about playing as the outcast. But as you walked through the multiple layers and webs of the story, you couldn’t help but be immersed by them. A king hired you to find his daughter, who happened to be your adoptive daughter as well. Let’s not forget that Geralt’s quest started as a simple one. The Witcher 3 did not only managed to present a complex, entangled world, but also made you care and be a part of it as you went through your journey. I could show you exactly why Vernon Roche insisted on leading Temerian guerrilla fighters and why he ended up turning against his own King Radovid to save Temeria. I cared deeply about the rich cast of supporting characters in the game and I could tell you in detail why the Nilfgaardian Empire chose to advance towards Temeria. Playing as a defined character oddly made you pay more attention to your surroundings, not less. Instead, you’re experiencing the world through the eyes of Geralt of Rivia, a character who has been defined by multiple stories, ballads, and events. In this game, you do not play as a messiah, the chosen one, the hero. Let’s compare that to how The Witcher 3 handled Geralt’s final journey. My time in Thedas felt like I was just moving from one chore to another. Dragon Age: Inquisition failed to make me care about the world, the people living in it, the side characters, the quests, and the struggle of my main character. Sure, I enjoyed my time as the Inquisitor, but that was it. Here’s the thing though: Once you’ve played enough RPGs, this concept starts to feel dated and boring. So much so that even the most powerful kingdom in Orlais had to bow down to your demand when you made a decision that shaped the entire future of said kingdom. You were so revered so much so that, within a few hours of playing, you gained a powerful army and were able to enact a law that affected the masses. Inquisition failed that.Īs the Inquisitor, you were a messiah, the chosen one, the one who eventually would shape and save the world. It reached a point where a game would have to offer something new and unique in order to impress anyone.
Remember that both titles were released after the gaming world had experienced a barrage of open-world games.
